AI tools are frequently integrated with identity systems, learning platforms, and communication tools. A compromised account or system can impact emergency communications, operational continuity, and visibility during critical events.

For example, a compromised AI-powered communication tool could delay or disrupt emergency notifications during a critical incident.

When AI becomes embedded into daily operations, its security directly affects both digital and physical safety.

Security must be part of AI adoption from day one.

The question is not whether schools should adopt AI. That decision has already been made. The real question is whether AI is being implemented responsibly.

That means:

  • Reviewing AI tools before deployment
  • Applying least-privilege access
  • Monitoring activity and usage
  • Educating staff and students

When AI is treated as part of the school’s cybersecurity strategy rather than a standalone tool, security cannot be added after the fact. It must be built in from the beginning.

AI offers real opportunities for schools. However, adopting it without fully addressing security implications can introduce gaps that undermine trust, safety, and compliance.
